Yoga for the special child…

Two things very close to my heart – Chiara and Yoga!

Some friends of ours lent us a book a while back ‘Yoga for the Special Child’ by Sonia Sumar. Her book is so inspiring, and equally heart-breaking. Sonia began teaching Yoga for children with special needs after her daughter Roberta was born with Downs Syndrome and other developmental delays.

Here is a link to the benefits of Yoga for kids with Cerebral Palsy. The most important aspect of asana practice for children with cerebral palsy is its ability to stretch and realign the spine. Asanas flex and twist the spine in all directions. Sonia’s scientifically designed series of stretches and counter-stretches helps to create more space between the vertebrae and reduce pressure on the disks and nerves that radiate out of the spine. Reducing the pressure on these radial nerves facilitates the release of muscular tension throughout the body and enhances overall nerve function. As a result, the child is able to develop a greater range of movement and coordination, as well as greater independence.

Here is a quick youtube video – beautiful!

“Yoga brings together the child as a whole”

Sonia’s life dream is to help the world’s special children achieve their full potential and become active and productive members of society. Best news is… Sonia is coming to Melbourne to teach the initial training program in January! Thank you universe xo
