N.A..S.A came up with a list air-filtering plants after researching ways to clean air in space stations. As well as absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen, as all plants do, these plants also eliminate significant amounts of benzeneformaldehyde and trichloroethylene.

Did you know The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that people spend 90% of their time indoors, and it is believed that indoor air quality can be two to five times more polluted than outdoor air. Proper air circulation is crucial in any home, because airflow regulates temperature, removes impurities, prevents mould and creates a more pleasant and safe breathing environment. If you are trying to improve air quality in your home you cant go past the following strategies:

– Keep a window ajar in every room to promote fresh air, ventilation and control humidity. By simply opening windows in different rooms, you can create a cross flow that improves the circulation of the entire house. Properly ventilating your home is one of the best ways to protect and improve air quality and minimize mould.

– Flood your home with plants. The Snake Plant, or Mother-in-Law’s Tongue, in particular is one of the most recommended plants for improving air quality. The optimal place to keep this plant is in the bedroom, because it converts CO2 into oxygen at night. While most plants take away oxygen at night, this one gives off oxygen at night. The plant also filters formaldehyde, trichloroethylene, xylene, toluene, and benzene from the air. It is recommended to have 6-8 waist-high plants per person for optimal output!!!
