home program, healing foods..

We managed to get through a lot of the home program today. Mauro, Frank and I spent the morning ticking off the various exercises.. we’re slowly getting into the groove and working with Chiara and her needs as the day goes by, including sleep times and meal times…

Im getting excited about meal times in particular, because I can add as much nutrient- dense food and supplements into Chiara’s diet. I’m grateful for studying Natural Medicine, as it’s allowed me to tap back into one of the greatest healers… food!

“Let food be thy medicine and let thy medicine be food” Hippocrates

At the moment, bone broths are all the rage! Yes I give Chiara a bottle of bone broth a day, and add it to Grace’s foods where I can. It’s an absolute elixir of health. Thank you to Holistic Child and Friends of Zara for this info:

“Today broth is used as a nutritional source as the bones add calcium, magnesium, iron, sodium, chloride, sulfur, phosphorus and potassium into the stock/broth. Bone broth even contains glucosamine and chondroiton – which are thought to help mitigate the deleterious effects of arthritis and joint pain. By adding vegetables to the stocks to then form a soup we add electrolytes. This increases the vitamin and mineral content of the broth and adds further flavor. The natural gelatin in the bone broth contains high levels of glycine and proline, which aids digestion and most importantly helps heal the gut wall. Gelatin is an inexpensive source of supplementary protein and has been shown to help fight against degenerative joint disease. It also helps to support the connective tissue in the body and also helps the fingernails and hair to grow well and strong.

Glycine not only heals the gut and aids digestion it also helps with sleep, detoxification of environmental toxins and the formation of glutathione. This is exceptionally important for any child with neurological dysfunction especially ASD and Down Syndrome as they have heightened risks of gastrointestinal malabsorption and digestive issues. Proline is also nutritious and aids in the formation of connective tissue in the skin, the gut and ligaments.Stocks are easily absorbed by the body and provide a powerhouse of amino acids , vitamins & minerals. They not only improve digestion, allergies, immune health, brain health but also improve connective tissue, increase hair growth and re-mineralize teeth.” (Friends of Zara)

The Naughty Naturopath Mum also has some great info on the benefits of healing the gut, and check out the site Broth of Life!!

Chiara is currently on a dairy, wheat and sugar free diet. Mainly organic whole foods, fruit and vegetables, organic chicken, fish and red-meat. Fresh cold-pressed juices and broth bottles, water etc. Her current supplements include: pro-biotics, high potency fish oil, multi vitamin, gingko, magnesium. Will explore Vitamin C, glyconutrients, zinc, Vitamin D, Iron.

We have also introduced homeopathic medicines from Puraforce Remedies, which have been amazing! Constipation and Digestion drops have worked a treat, which has been a source of concern due to her lack of mobility. A little more info here on the world of Homeopathics.

Us humans are made to move – we need this function for our survival. The lymphatic system, for example, bathes every cell, carrying nutrients to the cell and waste products away. Yet the lymph is totally dependent on physical exercise to move….

So we need to get this little girl moving for so many reasons, at 15 months the time on the clock is ticking slowly. Chiara can roll from her back to side, but it’s rare for this to happen. Sitting, standing & moving independently feels worlds away – I need to remind myself constantly “micro milestones, micro milestones micro milestones…”
